In the upcoming weeks Impact Amplifier will be releasing a report on ‘Energy Provision at the Base of the Pyramid’. The research secured inclusion in the World Bank’s Market Connect and Finance Lab programme earlier this year, with the primary intention to determine if there are financially viable, scalable business models providing affordable, renewable energy to both the unserved and underserved energy user market in South Africa.
The review looks at provision models for rural and urban areas that are not connected to the Eskom grid as well as households that are connected, but cannot afford the energy options available to them. Existing South African BOP renewable energy models are reviewed and international best practice interrogated in order to gain perspective on South African businesses and determine if possible business diffusion opportunities exist.
